Why you need an efficient slip additive

Polyesters such as PET and PLA are widely used in the food packaging industry. In addition to its excellent mechanical and optical properties, it also exhibits very good barrier properties. However, one of the challenges of processing and handling PET is its strong surface adhesion. Therefore, slip additives are required to reduce the coefficient of friction of the polymer surface during processing, handling and application. This enables better processibility and reduces the risk of surface defects.

PET is processed at higher temperatures (280 - 320ºC) and shows sensitivity towards hydrolysis. Due to hydrogen bonding, migration of additives through the PET matrix is more demanding. This means that polymer additives for PET require very specific properties. Polarity of the additive, high temperature and chemical stability during processing are all important parameters to be considered.

Einar® 621 is an efficient food-grade slip additive that can bring the coefficient of friction (CoF) down to 0.2 in most applications and will facilitate better handling and processing of film, sheet and finished product.

Einar® 621 is a chemically stable compound with excellent heat stability and low volatility and will match the specific requirements of processing PET, even under highly demanding conditions. Due to its excellent lubrication properties, PET films, injection moulded and thermoformed products containing 1.0 - 2.0% of Einar® 621 show instant and significantly reduced surface friction. Einar® 621 is fully compatible with fillers used as anti-blocking agents – a combination where Einar® 621 will also perform very well.

    DESCRIPTION

    Einar® 621 is an internal slip additive tailor-made for PET and is highly efficient in other polyester types such as PLA used in injection moulded and extruded products.  

    This advanced polyglycerol with a selected fatty acid profile gives both short- and long-term slip effect leading to better easier processing, mould release and denesting in concentrations of 1.0 – 2.0% in the final piece.
